Exquisite Corpse (2015)

String quartet. 7:00.

Composed for Zephyr Quartet's project of the same name, "Exquisite Corpse" alternates between a deranged Tango motif and abstract sound textures written in graphic notation.  As one of 12 composers invited to participate in this musical version of the parlour game, I took on the task of continuing a small fragment of music handed over by the preceding composer (Kate Moore), while at the same time responding to the larger idea of surrealism, which for me suggests subversion of the familiar.  I was delighted to see how the antiphonal structure was highlighted in the production by video artists Jo Kerlogue and Kuku Lukuku.  This is my second collaboration with the wonderful Zephyr Quartet.

Commissioned by Zephyr String Quartet.  Premiered at Adelaide Festival.
