Flutes of the forest (2009)
for any number of flutists scattered throughout a forest. 10:00.
Flutes of the Forest is scored for any number of flutists scattered throughout a forest. It may also be played in other outdoor or indoor environments that may achieve an interesting spatial and ambient effect.
Each player should interpret the material independently, at their own pace, drifting in and out of sync with each other. From a base tempo of MM=100, performers may slow down and speed up in response to the environment, listening and interacting with other players.
When two or more notes are indicated in the score, each player may 1) choose one, 2) sing one and play another, 3) play a multiphonic, or 4) play a tremolo.
Flutes of the Forest was created for “Sounding the Condamine,” a musical happening celebrating the Condamine cowbell, and held on the banks of the Condamine River in Queensland. The project received generous support from Arts Queensland.
