From small things grow (2006)

Saxophone, violin, viola, cello, piano and percussion. 7:15.

A softly broken theme, developed on a rusted music box, provided the humble beginnigs of this piece for mixed chamber ensemble.  We hear the theme travel around the ensemble, from the music box to double-bass, to soprano saxophone.  Woven around the melody are a series of duet textures - violin and viola, piano and percussion, bass and ceramic bowls, which culminate in the full ensemble.  From small things grow takes inspiration from the music of Terry Riley, and it was premiered at the PULS8 festival, in which Riley himself was the guest of honor.

Composed for Topology and Clocked Out Duo with support from Arts Queensland and Brisbane Powerhouse.  Premiered by at PULS8 Festival, Brisbane Powerhouse, 22 April 2006.
